How did all start?
I was 6 months pregnant in 2000 over the winter and noticed bumps that were itchy around my wrists. I already have tons of allergies so I figured it was another reaction to something else. After my son was born, I was out shoveling the driveway and almost immediately felt an itchy burning on my thighs. It went downhill from there.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
It took me a year before I finally decided to see a Specialist. I saw a Dermatologist first because I thought I had some weird skin issue. He in turn referred me to an Allergist because he had seen a case similar to mine. This was in 2002.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
Education, medication and avoiding normal triggers that will cause a flare up.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
Swimming. I had been a competitive swimmer for years. The hives, the rapid heart beat and general breathlessness wasn't worth putting myself in danger any longer.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
Family finally understand. Acquaintances and people who discover this allergy generally roll their eyes and made some snide comment. I avoid triggers with people so I dont have to explain the condition of my skin after a reaction.
What things have you stopped doing?
Swimming, walking in the winter, anything if it's too cold out for me. Generally below 15°C is too much.
