Symptoms of Arachnoiditis

Arachnoiditis is a rare but debilitating condition that affects the arachnoid, one of the membranes surrounding the spinal cord. It is characterized by inflammation and scarring of the arachnoid, leading to a range of symptoms that can significantly impact a person's quality of life.

Pain: Chronic pain is the hallmark symptom of arachnoiditis. The pain can be severe and may be described as burning, stinging, or electric shock-like. It often affects the lower back, legs, and feet, but can also radiate to other areas of the body.

Numbness and Tingling: Many individuals with arachnoiditis experience numbness, tingling, or a sensation of pins and needles in the affected areas. This can be accompanied by a loss of sensation or altered sensitivity to touch.

Motor and Sensory Problems: Arachnoiditis can lead to muscle weakness, muscle cramps, and difficulty with coordination. Some individuals may also experience muscle spasms or involuntary muscle movements. Sensory disturbances, such as decreased reflexes or loss of bladder or bowel control, can also occur.

Neurological Symptoms: In some cases, arachnoiditis can cause neurological symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, and problems with vision or hearing. These symptoms may be intermittent or persistent, depending on the severity of the condition.

Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction: Arachnoiditis can affect the nerves that control bladder and bowel function, leading to urinary or fecal incontinence, difficulty urinating or emptying the bladder completely, or constipation.

Sexual Dysfunction: Some individuals with arachnoiditis may experience sexual dysfunction, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or difficulty achieving orgasm.

Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances: Chronic pain and the impact on daily activities can lead to fatigue and sleep disturbances in individuals with arachnoiditis. Sleep may be disrupted due to pain or discomfort, making it difficult to get restful sleep.

Psychological Effects: Living with chronic pain and the limitations imposed by arachnoiditis can take a toll on a person's mental health. Anxiety, depression, irritability, and mood swings are common psychological effects associated with this condition.

Other Symptoms: Some individuals may also experience symptoms such as muscle wasting, joint stiffness, skin changes, and difficulty with balance or walking.

It is important to note that the symptoms of arachnoiditis can vary from person to person, and the severity of symptoms can also fluctuate over time. If you suspect you may have arachnoiditis or are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

Symptoms can vary with each patient. No two patients are alike. There is a vast difference between Arachnoiditis and Adhesive Arachnoiditis. Common symptoms for Arachnoiditis are listed below. Tingling, numbness, or weakness in the legs. Sensations that may feel like insects crawling on the skin or water trickling down the leg. Severe shooting pain that can be similar to an electric shock sensation. Muscle cramps, spasms and uncontrollable twitching. Bladder, bowel and sexual problems.

Pain! Especially electric-shock-like pain going from the lower back down one or both legs. Muscle spasms. Nerve spasms. Pain flares. Restless Leg Syndrome. There are a variety of collateral symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, extreme fatigue, stomach issues, blurry vision, and dry mouth. Because Arachnoiditis attacks the nervous system, any part of the body can be affected at any time.
