This is currently unknown. It affects both male and female children, but to date I do not know of any who have reached adulthood. The original Japanese research study was comprised of 11 patients. Counting my son, I am in contact with 14 additional children around the world. As awareness grows, more children will receive the diagnosis and potentially more effective treatment. However, I believe this is a very rare disorder affecting a small overall percentage of the population.
