In the chronic phase, the most debilitating symptom of CLL can be fatigue. It was once thought that this fatigue was more emotional in nature, but more recently CLL experts have found that because CLL is a cancer of the immune system, it can cause immune system inflammation symptoms. They believe that cytokines, a component of our innate immunity, are the culprit. For instance, when we come down with a cold or influenza, our immune system goes into high gear, cytokines are released, and they make us feel achy, exhausted, and sometimes even depressed. This same reaction may be taking place in CLL patients. Some do not experience any fatigue, and for others like myself, it is debilitating.
Another frustrating symptom of CLL is worrying. This is a cancer that is not fought head on in traditional western medicine, and for some the worrying feeling of walking around for years with cancer swimming in your blood can be devastating. For me, I find this to be to my advantage. I am able to nourish my body and try other naturopathic treatments instead of jumping right into chemo.
