There are a number of devices being studied, both non-invasive and invasive (with surgery). Nothing is absolutely successful so far and the neuro-stimulator is very expensive because insurance companies do not yet cover it. Apparently it has to do with the vagus nerve and stopping the pain at onset. There are also surgeons cutting nerves to stop the pain but this is not only very dramatic and invasive but oftimes the nerve regenerates.
