In the past, GBS was often misdiagnosed, for instance with FD Roosevelt who was thought to have had Polio as a young man, leading through his ambassadorship to a boost in research and eventually development of effective vaccination for the disease. In hindsight, the presentation of his paralytic illness resembles GBS symptoms a lot more closely - alas, in the early 1920s this was not an available diagnosis yet in the US.
