Story about Hereditary Angioedema .

How HAE made me a better person

Jun 23, 2026

One day I had a terrible HAE abdominal attack. My father told me I had to keep it a secret so I could fulfill my dreams. A year later, when he missed dancing with my sister at her Grad  because he was in hospital, he told me I had to figure this out. He had enough money to send me to be a nurse, but not a doctor. 2 weeks before I started nursing school, my father dies at home, like many of his siblings. 35 years later, I am President of HAE Canada. Received a diagnosis for my daughter 4 years ago. Unfortunately not soon enough to prevent losing my sister. I can honestly say, I am a stronger person,  because I have  survived HAE.

Oh my goodness your story kills me.  I have just been diagnosed with HAE and am super nervous to get my children ages 7 and 11 tested.  I wouldn't wish this disease on anyone.

Sorry Katie just saw this now. There is one thing HAE gives us....resilience. Never under estimate your strength. 2 of my children have HAE. I find it more difficult being a caregiver then a survivor. I hear you...it's hard.
