Engaging in physical activity while managing Pancreatitis is generally advisable, provided you have medical clearance and approach movement with a focus on low-intensity, restorative practices.

The Role of Movement in Recovery

Living with Pancreatitis often leads to muscle wasting and fatigue due to malabsorption and chronic pain. Gentle, consistent exercise can help maintain core stability and improve your mental well-being, which is vital when navigating the challenges of this condition. However, your body requires significant energy for internal healing; therefore, exercise should never be pushed to the point of exhaustion or increased abdominal pain.

Safe and Recommended Activities

When your symptoms are well-managed, focus on low-impact activities that do not strain the abdominal wall.

  • Walking: Simple, rhythmic walking is the best place to start to improve circulation without taxing your system.

  • Restorative Yoga or Stretching: These practices help reduce stress and improve flexibility, though you must avoid any poses that put direct pressure on your abdomen.

  • Swimming or Water Aerobics: The buoyancy of water is excellent for those with Pancreatitis, as it provides resistance without the impact of gravity on your joints and core.

Activities to Approach with Caution

Avoid high-intensity interval training (HIIT), heavy weightlifting, or contact sports, as these can increase intra-abdominal pressure and exacerbate inflammation. If you experience a flare-up of Pancreatitis, immediate rest is the priority. On these difficult days, practice "pacing"—listen to your body’s signals and prioritize rest over movement until your medical team confirms you are stable.

Getting Started Safely

Always consult your gastroenterologist before beginning a new routine. A physical therapist can help design a program tailored to the specific limitations of Pancreatitis, ensuring you progress gradually. Start with just 5–10 minutes of light movement and observe how your body responds over the next 24 hours.

I have always walked and sometimes would go for a run. It's important to keep fit and healthy as best you can. Swimming would be a good way of keeping fit but would be low impact.

Any exercises/activities can be done when having pancreatitis, the only 'activity' that can affect pancreatitis is eating (like fat) and drinking alcohol.
