Story about Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) .

It's only a cyst

May 16, 2016

I had my DFSP for about 18 mths before my daughter who is a nurse thought my lump had changed. It was blue/purplish in colour. I do remember knocking my arm whilst making my bed and it developed into a bruise, which basically never went away. It then got bigger, so I went to see my GP, who referred me to a Dermatologist. He immediately thought it was a cancer and had me return later to do a biopsy. When the results came back he told me he didn't expect it being DFSP he thought it was something much more sinister !!!!

I was then referred to a plastic surgeon who performed a wide excision with 3cm margins with a skin graft. I returned 6 weeks later to be told by the plastic surgeon that there was still a little left. I was offered to leave it alone and see if it would grow back or radiotherapy. I opted for the radiotherapy which was 27 session. Five and a half weeks Monday to Friday. This treatment finished in December 2015 and I have since had a chest X-ray and an MRI on the scar to get a baseline. I have had a review with the oncologist and now I go again in three months to the sarcoma clinic.

Hi. Similar experience - 'sebacious cyst' on right thigh, WE 2cm margins, awaiting further path report, June 2016. Years ago hit thigh on corner of a table and the bruising was severe and painful and I'm sure the dfsp grew in that place. I had asked about mohs surgery and told it wasn't available although that seems surgery of choice in other countries.
