Type 1 - my little story

Nov 10, 2015

By: Natalie

I have had Type 1 diabetes since 1989.  I am now 34 years old, and have 2 healthy (non diabetic) daughters.  I come from Scottish Iranian roots.  The diabetes is in the Scottish family (maternal side).  A cousin of mine is also Type 1.  I was not breastfed and was born by c-section, which apparently are two other risk factors to possibly becoming Type 1.  I understand that low levels of vitamin D are also a risk factor to Type 1, and Scotland definitely lacks some sunshine!

I try to help other Type 1s as much as I can, particularly those facing pregnancy with Type 1 diabetes.  I also offer help to mothers of Type 1 children.  This helps me feel fulfilled and I want people to know there are not alone with this silent and all-encomposing chronic disease that is so hard to feel positive about.

To this day, I have no complications.
