Late in 2014 I noticed a small lump in my right hand. I thought it was a callus. When I asked my doctor he did not seem to know what it was. I later looked it up on the internet and was not happy with what I found.Some months later I was horrified to see a lump appear in my left hand. I do not remember other family members having it. I saw a hand doctor in 2015, she diagnosed it as Dupuytrens. I saw her again a year later, and was advised to go back when the fingers bent. A year ago I was contacted by a cousin that I had lost touch with many years ago. She had been researching the family tree. Turns out Dupuytrens was common in the family (Father's side), I then heard from another cousin who had just had hand surgery, yes it was Dupuytrens, so it is on both sides of my family.
So far I have bumps and a small cord on both hands. No contracture.
The hand doctor said that women are less inclined to be badly effected and I hope she is right.
I had never heard of this disease and the more I learn I am surprised how common it is.
