Children with MIRAGE syndrome suffer from recurrent infections and this most impacts their lifespan and their quality of life. Another significant symptom of MIRAGE is adrenal insufficiency, which may not be immediately diagnosed and may be aggravated by infection, complicating treatment. Children with MIRAGE seem to universally have problems with their digestive systems, causing vomiting and chronic diarrhea, as well as infection, and most children are dependent on feeding tubes for their nutritional needs. Some children develop myelodysplasia (MDS), requiring bone marrow transplant, and it is difficult to predict the outcome of this treatment since so many other factors play into the situation, such as the child's age and underlying health. It is not known at this time why some children with MIRAGE do not seem to develop MDS, but it seems to be the most potentially life-limiting factor of MIRAGE besides complications from recurrent infections.
