Does Essential Tremor have a cure?

Currently, there is no medical cure for Essential Tremor, a progressive neurological condition characterized by involuntary, rhythmic shaking. While we cannot yet stop or reverse the underlying pathology, current medical and surgical interventions are highly effective at managing symptoms to improve quality of life for the 62 members of our Essential Tremor community and beyond.

What can current treatments achieve for Essential Tremor?

Modern management of Essential Tremor focuses on symptom suppression rather than disease modification. First-line pharmacological treatments, such as beta-blockers (propranolol) and anti-seizure medications (primidone), help reduce tremor amplitude. For patients where medication is insufficient, surgical options like Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) or MRI-guided focused ultrasound can provide significant, long-term tremor relief by targeting the specific circuits in the brain responsible for the oscillations.

What does the future of Essential Tremor research look like?

Research into Essential Tremor is shifting from generalized symptom management toward precision medicine. Scientists are currently investigating the genetic architecture of the disease to identify specific biomarkers, which may eventually lead to targeted gene therapies. Current research directions include:

• Pharmacological innovation: Testing novel T-type calcium channel blockers that aim to address the root neurological excitability.
