Sarah W's interview

How did all start?

Constant vulvar itching, swelling and redness, at menopausal age

Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?

Yes, 6 months from first signs. Initially wrongly diagnosed with yeast infection.

For what medical specialties have you been treated? What has been the most useful specialty for your?

Lichen sclerosis, prescribed dermovate ointment and advised not to use soap so now use emu aid therapeutical bar for washing and white cotton underwear.

What has been the most useful thing for you so far?

As above

What have been your biggest difficulties?

Lack of information and general knowledge within the UK health system. I know more than most GP’s and some Gyneacologist’s

How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?

Not told anyone apart from my husband, he is understanding.

What things have you stopped doing?

Running due to friction irritations.

What do you think about the future?

Uncertainty as to how this disease develops. From the Facebook closed groups that I have gained the majority of my knowledge I understand that the condition can stop sex life, cause constant pain and anxiety. This is a worry but I am unaffected at present. Therefore I take each day as it comes.

So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?

Only been diagnosed with this for 2 years. My life is a great life and nothing has stopped me from enjoying it.

What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?

Na

If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?

Live each day as it comes, enjoy all moments as you never know what is around the corner.

Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?

Join all closed Facebook or social media pages you can, gain as much knowledge as you can. When you meet with your specialists ask all questions that you feel appropriate and make them understand your knowledge. Don’t allow anyone to dismiss your awareness and condition. Most specialists have little understanding of the disease.
