My name is Celia. I am a welderat a factory in a small town in Illinois. One Sunday morning I woke up and my right lower leg was on fire. It hurt and burned so bad I barely remember driving to the hospital. I went to the er. They put me in a room and drew blood and gave me something for pain. I don't remember much after that except when the nurse told me they were going to fly me in a helicopter to a hospital in a much bigger city. Once I got to the other hospital, I was admitted and on Tuesday the operated to excise the tissue on my leg. It had already started to infect the muscle. They excised the tissue and applied cadaver skin. It was days later when they performed another surgery to skin graft the affected area. During this time, I was receiving IV antibiotics. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks total. It really was a catastrophe illness that affected my life in many negative ways. My recovery continues even now--9 months later.
