Short answer · Medically reviewed summary · Last updated: 2026-05-08

There is currently no evidence-based, specific diet that directly treats or cures Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP). While no clinical studies confirm that dietary changes eliminate the human papillomavirus (HPV) responsible for Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis, maintaining a balanced, nutrient-dense diet is essential for supporting immune function and overall quality of life during treatment and recovery. Is there a specific "RRP diet" to manage symptoms? No, there is no medically recognized "RRP diet." Because Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis is a viral condition characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors in the respiratory tract, nutrition serves primarily as a supportive measure.

Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis diet

Patients often experience difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or breathing post-surgery; in these cases, focusing on the texture and temperature of foods is more important than specific nutrient restriction.

What nutritional strategies support those with Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis?

For individuals managing the physical toll of Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis, the goal is to reduce systemic inflammation and support healing. Although evidence is anecdotal rather than clinical, many patients find the following strategies helpful:

  • Soft, cool food textures: Following surgical procedures to remove papillae, soft or cold foods (e.g., smoothies, yogurt, applesauce) can soothe throat irritation.

  • Anti-inflammatory focus: Emphasizing whole foods, such as leafy greens, berries, and omega-3 fatty acids, may help manage general inflammation.

  • Adequate Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is critical to ensure mucus membranes remain lubricated, which can alleviate the persistent cough common in Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis.

Are supplements or restrictive diets recommended?

There is no high-level clinical evidence supporting the use of specific supplements, ketogenic diets, or elimination diets to stop the growth of papillomas in Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis. Before starting any supplement, consult your physician, as some may interfere with prescribed medications or treatments. Currently, 156 people with Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis in our DiseaseMaps community emphasize that while diet cannot replace surgical or antiviral interventions, optimal nutrition improves resilience during the frequent procedures often required for this condition.

I believe everyone's case is different. I have trouble with carbonation and acidic foods/drinks.

For me, I am also effected by acid reflux. I try to limit dairy (milk, ice cream and coffee creamer) in order to limit the amount of times I feel the need to clear my throat.
I also try to limit spicy foods. ultimately, it depends on the person and how the disease is effecting you.
