Many individuals living with Sjogren maintain successful, fulfilling careers by tailoring their work environment to manage symptoms like fatigue, dryness, and joint pain.

Navigating Work with Sjogren

Whether you can continue in your current role or need to pivot depends on the specific manifestations of Sjogren, such as the severity of your neuropathy, systemic fatigue, or joint involvement. The key is identifying "energy-efficient" work patterns. Many people with Sjogren thrive in roles that offer autonomy, pacing, and the ability to manage environmental factors, such as humidity control or lighting, which can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.

Accommodations and Strategies

Workplace accommodations can significantly improve daily function. Common, effective requests include:

  • Flexible Scheduling: Utilizing "flex-time" to manage peak fatigue periods or medical appointments.

  • Ergonomic Support: Using humidifiers at your desk, anti-glare screens for light sensitivity, or ergonomic keyboards to mitigate joint pain.

  • Remote Work: Telecommuting often allows for better control over the physical environment, reducing the strain of commuting and office climate control.

  • Frequent Breaks: Scheduling short, regular intervals to apply lubricating eye drops, hydrate, or stretch to alleviate stiffness.

Communication and Legal Rights

In many regions, you have legal protections under disability acts that mandate "reasonable accommodations." When speaking with an employer, focus on your professional capabilities and the specific, simple adjustments that will allow you to maintain your productivity. You are not required to disclose every detail of your Sjogren diagnosis, but providing documentation from your rheumatologist can help facilitate the formal accommodation process.

Many members of the Sjogren community at DiseaseMaps have successfully built long-term careers by prioritizing their health without sacrificing their professional ambitions. By focusing on energy management and advocating for a supportive environment, you can continue to contribute your skills effectively. Remember that your professional worth remains intact, and with the right adjustments, you can navigate your career path with confidence.

I haven't been able to work full time. Just some light work in a less than stressful environment and not demanding work.

Yes, we can work, but it's easier if you are self employed because you are able to take breaks more often and rest the days that yo are not feeling so good. Prolonged fatigue causes us to work a bot slow most of the time.

Yes. I've been working since 2000. I work in a school so I don't work 'year round'. There have been some really bad years, hard to walk, pain.

Yes, some people can, depends on the severity or progress of the disease.

You can definitely work but it is limiting.. However it depends how far along your illness is. I am an executive assistant and find midway through the day my eyes get super dry and I need to put eyedrops.
