Alicia's interview
How did all start?
From young age they thought my muscles in my eye werent developing how they should be. At the age of 11 i went to secondary school, they thought i was dyslexic. So i went for the dyslexic test, the optician said there was something else going on but they didnt have the techonology to look into my eye. So i got refered to the opthamologist, they lookde in more detail and realsied there was something ther but wasnt sure what it was. I went to another opthermologist for several hourss of testing and was diagnosed with starfardts.
Do you already have a diagnosis? How long did it take you to get it?
Yes, from about the age of 7 somehting was wrong but tehy didnt know what.
What has been the most useful thing for you so far?
An Ipad, so handy for reading on and socialising with ohters on.
What have been your biggest difficulties?
Getting people to remember that i cant see as well as them and that ti am not being rude when i dont make eye contact.
How has your social and family environment reacted? Have your social or family relationships changed?
No my family and friends are very supportive. They even sometimes forget i am blind.
What things have you stopped doing?
Nothing. It shouldnt hold you back.
What do you think about the future?
Wait and see what happens.
So far, which years have been the best years in your life? What have you done during them?
19, i partied loads and got great AS results.
What would you like to do if you didn’t have your condition?
Drive a vechicle. Preferably a tractor or a range rover.
If you had to describe your life in a sentence, what would it be?
Unique and never the same thing , ther is always a surprise or something going on.
Finally, what advice would you give to a person in a similar situation?
There is always light at the end of the tunel.
