Symptoms of Actinomycosis

Actinomycosis is a rare bacterial infection that primarily affects the soft tissues of the face and neck, although it can also occur in other parts of the body. The infection is caused by a group of bacteria called Actinomyces, which are normally present in the mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract. Actinomycosis can manifest in various ways, and its symptoms can vary depending on the location and severity of the infection.

1. Oral and Facial Actinomycosis: The most common form of actinomycosis affects the head and neck region. Symptoms may include:

  • Painful swelling or a lump in the face, neck, or jaw

  • Formation of abscesses or draining sinuses

  • Difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing

  • Facial or oral pain

  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

2. Thoracic Actinomycosis: This form of actinomycosis affects the lungs and chest cavity. Symptoms may include:

  • Chest pain

  • Coughing up blood or phlegm

  • Fever and chills

  • Shortness of breath

  • Weight loss

3. Abdominal Actinomycosis: Actinomycosis can also affect the abdomen and gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms may include:

  • Abdominal pain and tenderness

  • Swelling or a mass in the abdomen

  • Changes in bowel habits

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Weight loss

4. Pelvic Actinomycosis: In women, actinomycosis can affect the pelvis, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Symptoms may include:

  • Pelvic pain

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge

  • Painful sexual intercourse

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding

  • Fever and fatigue

5. Other General Symptoms: Regardless of the location, actinomycosis can cause general symptoms that may include:

  • Fever and fatigue

  • Weight loss

  • Night sweats

  • Malaise

It is important to note that actinomycosis can mimic other conditions, making it challenging to diagnose. The symptoms may develop slowly over weeks or months, and the infection can spread to nearby tissues if left untreated. If you experience any persistent or concerning symptoms, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

My diagnosis is actinomycosis with lung abcess.
First, I thought I had bruised a rib somehow. Then that pain in my ribs got much worse. I became lethargic, within four to five days from the initial pain along my ribs I received a ride to the hospital and all along the way the pain was so intense I couldn't help but moan and yell out when going over any bump in the road.
