Story about Alport Syndrome .

Spracklen Family

Aug 15, 2017

By: April

My dad, Lee Spracklen, knew the minute I was born a girl that I had Alport Syndrome.  My dad had it and our family has X linked Alports.  Which meant he gave me his bad X. My dad had issues with his kidneys as a young boy. And had a kidney transplant early on in my life. So for as long as I can remember I have known about Alports and what it meant for me.  We watched what I ate and what I did and what I took.  Both my dad and my grandma suffered kidney failure from Alports.  Aside from some moments over the years my numbers have stayed well enough.  I have so far chosen not to have children of my own.  In part because pregnancy is hard on the kidneys and because if I did I would prefer to do IVF with genetic testing so the syndrome does not get passed down any more in my family.
