Is HELLP Syndrome hereditary?

HELLP syndrome is a rare but serious pregnancy complication that affects the blood and liver. It is an acronym for Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, and Low Platelet count. While the exact cause of HELLP syndrome is still unknown, it is believed to be related to problems with the placenta and the immune system.

As for its hereditary nature, there is currently no evidence to suggest that HELLP syndrome is directly inherited. It is not considered a genetic disorder that is passed down from parents to their children. However, certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of developing HELLP syndrome, such as a history of preeclampsia or HELLP syndrome in a previous pregnancy.

It is important to note that HELLP syndrome can occur in any pregnancy, even if there is no previous history of the condition. The syndrome typically develops in the third trimester, but it can also occur earlier or even after delivery. Prompt medical attention is crucial as HELLP syndrome can be life-threatening for both the mother and the baby.

If you are concerned about the possibility of developing HELLP syndrome, it is recommended to discuss your medical history and any potential risk factors with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized guidance and monitor your pregnancy closely to ensure the best possible outcome.

Doctors do not know for certain if HELLP is hereditary. I would say no as no other women in my family have ever had it.

There could be genetic factors, but nothing has been declared. There is no known, specific to HELLP, genetic mutation to screen.
