Leishmaniasis Synonyms

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by the Leishmania parasite. It is also known by several other names, which are used interchangeably to refer to the same condition. Some of the synonyms for leishmaniasis include:

• Kala-azar: This term is commonly used in South Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Kala-azar literally means "black fever" in Hindi, referring to the darkening of the skin that can occur in severe cases of the disease.


• Black fever: This is another name for kala-azar, as mentioned above. It is used to describe the advanced stage of visceral leishmaniasis, characterized by symptoms such as prolonged fever, weight loss, and an enlarged spleen and liver.


• Visceral leishmaniasis: This term is used to describe the most severe form of leishmaniasis, where the parasite affects the internal organs such as the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. It is also known as systemic leishmaniasis.


• Cutaneous leishmaniasis: This form of leishmaniasis affects the skin and is characterized by the development of ulcers or sores at the site of the sandfly bite. It is also referred to as oriental sore or Aleppo boil in certain regions.


• Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis: This is a rare and severe form of leishmaniasis that affects the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, and throat, in addition to the skin. It can cause disfigurement and functional impairment.

These synonyms are used by healthcare professionals, researchers, and communities affected by leishmaniasis to describe the different manifestations of the disease. While the names may vary, they all refer to the same parasitic infection caused by the Leishmania parasite.
