What are the common synonyms for Osteonecrosis?

Medical terminology for osteonecrosis has evolved over time, leading to various names found in medical records and older research. Common synonyms include avascular necrosis (AVN), aseptic necrosis, and ischemic bone necrosis. In specific clinical contexts, the disease may be named after the anatomical site affected, such as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (when it occurs in the hip of a child) or Kienböck’s disease (when it affects the lunate bone in the wrist).

Why are there so many names for this condition?

The variety of names for osteonecrosis stems from both historical naming conventions—often named after the physicians who first described specific presentations—and the need to distinguish between traumatic and non-traumatic causes. Because osteonecrosis can be triggered by diverse factors like corticosteroid use, alcohol consumption, or injury, terminology has shifted to prioritize the underlying physiological mechanism (bone death) over the clinical appearance.

How is Osteonecrosis classified in medical systems?

Major international systems provide standardized coding for osteonecrosis to ensure consistent diagnosis and billing:

  • ICD-10/11: Classified under diseases of the musculoskeletal system (typically codes M87).

  • Orphanet: Recognized as a rare condition (ORPHA:658) when associated with specific genetic syndromes or metabolic disorders.

  • OMIM: Tracks various hereditary forms, such as those related to sickle cell disease or Gaucher disease.

Which name should patients use?

While you may see "avascular necrosis" on older charts, osteonecrosis is the most precise term used by modern orthopedic surgeons and rheumatologists. At DiseaseMaps.org, we have seen 410 people with osteonecrosis connect through our platform, and using the standardized term helps ensure you find the most relevant peer support and clinical resources.

Osteonecrosis refers to the specific disease mechanism. Osteo = bone and necrosis = death. It is also known as avascular necrosis and ischaemic bone necrosis referring to the lack of blood supply that causes the bone death. It can also be called aseptic necrosis meaning bone death without infection present.
