Amyloidosis diet. Is there a diet which improves the quality of life of people with Amyloidosis?

Diet and Amyloidosis: foods that patients report help their quality of life, with a medically reviewed summary.

Amyloidosis diet

There is no specific "Amyloidosis diet" that can cure or reverse the disease, but targeted nutritional strategies are essential for managing symptoms and supporting organ function in patients with Amyloidosis.

Dietary Modifications for Symptom Management

Because Amyloidosis often affects the heart, kidneys, or gastrointestinal tract, dietary modifications must be individualized based on the specific organs involved. Patients with cardiac involvement often require a low-sodium diet to manage fluid retention and reduce the workload on the heart. If renal involvement is present, a nephrologist may recommend restricting protein, phosphorus, or potassium intake to preserve kidney function. For those experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms like malabsorption or early satiety, eating smaller, more frequent meals can improve nutritional intake and quality of life.

Foods to Avoid and Nutritional Support

There is no clinical evidence supporting the use of ketogenic, elimination, or anti-inflammatory diets specifically for treating Amyloidosis. In fact, restrictive diets can be dangerous, as patients are already at high risk for malnutrition and weight loss. Instead, focus on a balanced, nutrient-dense diet. Avoid excessive alcohol, which can exacerbate neuropathy or heart strain. Regarding supplements, there is limited clinical evidence for specific vitamins; however, patients with malabsorption may require supplementation of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) under strict medical supervision.

Medication Interactions and Hydration

Dietary choices can significantly interact with therapies. For instance, if you are taking diuretics for Amyloidosis-related edema, your electrolyte levels must be monitored closely. High-sodium intakes can counteract the efficacy of these medications. Staying hydrated is vital, but patients with cardiac Amyloidosis must strictly adhere to fluid restrictions prescribed by their cardiologist to prevent congestive heart failure. Always consult your multidisciplinary care team before adding herbal supplements, as these can interfere with anticoagulants or chemotherapy agents often used in treatment.
